초록
This paper examines how participant connections in educational videos are multimodally realized. To this end, the study analyzed four TED-Ed animated videos by transcribing their linguistic, visual, and auditory modes. The analysis focuses on the linkage of the same participants across shots (identity chains), the connections among participants (action patterns), and the relations between verbal and visual resources. Cohesion in identity chains is achieved through linguistic reference, visual similarity, and both linguistic and visual strategies such as metonymy, hyponymy, and metaphorical representation. When participants in the videos are animate humans or animals, interactive processes occur frequently. In contrast, when participants are inanimate objects, conceptual processes predominate. Finally, linguistic modes tend to convey abstract and general meanings, while visual modes provide concrete and specific representations, thereby helping viewers understand complex scientific concepts. By demonstrating how TED-Ed integrates linguistic, visual, and auditory resources to connect participants, this study highlights how cohesion is multimodally achieved in meaning making.
