초록

This essay offers a case study of the experience of teaching first-year English major students Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Scandal in Bohemia” by integrating ChatGPT into a literature exercise. One of the course’s weekly assignments asked the students (all English majors, mostly freshmen) to convert Irene Adler’s letter that appears in the ending of the short story into six-panel comic strips by writing a specific set of prompts into ChatGPT and editing the resulting images. Investigating six assignment samples whose engagement with the chatbot demonstrates each student’s different understanding of and creative relationship with the tool, the essay suggests that with the help of ChatGPT’s multimodal function to draw illustrations the students ventured into creative terrain where they could reimagine Doyle’s source story. This intermedial exercise also underlines the role of prompts, which are becoming a new writing genre. Ultimately, AI technology calls for a reconsideration of pedagogical practices and goals to utilize prompt technologies as a new writing mode for the so-called digital natives in English classes.
