The main aim of this paper is to provide language-teaching colleagues with an opportunity to rethink and extend the idea and scope of literacy pedagogy; namely, to show why and how Korean TV Public Service Announcements (PSAs) (Gong-ik Gwang-go) can serve as a valuable resource for content-based teaching of Korean language and cultural literacy. PSAs are often referred to as ‘a mirror of society’ or ‘reflection of culture’, and they can be used as a window into Korean society in the language classroom. Through PSAs, learners can identify significant public issues and shifts in societal themes. From the perspective of language pedagogy, we can incorporate content objectives (i.e., culture, social issues, and multiliteracies) into the language curriculum via the use of PSAs.
