초록
Prompted by English-conscious and education-obsessed Korean parents' overzealous enthusiasm for educating English, more and more children are recently sent to foreign countries for the acquisition of English. However, many researchers warn that this early study-abroad may cause a variety of problems in the children’s emotional or psychosocial, linguistic, and academic development. Among these problems, this paper delves into a problem of young overseas students' academic development in terms of literacy. Contrary to the popular belief that children can easily catch up with their English-speaking peers in school, most of the early study-abroad children have a hard time not only achieving academic literacy in English but also reaching their peers’ level of Korean literacy back in Korea. In particular, it has been observed that H, a returnee, falls far behind other students in the literacy development both in English and in Korean. The story of H suggests that only the continuous input of two languages can guarantee balanced bilingualism, especially in terms of literacy development.
