초록

This paper analyzed Teaching History, Learning Citizenship (THLC), a U.S. history curriculum aimed at promoting informed civic engagement to find implications for Korean history education. The THLC curriculum aligns its goals with a democratic citizen approach, while adopting a disciplinary approach to achieve them. In addition, the THLC curriculum utilizes three organizing principles to promote informed civic engagement. First, the topics of study are chosen to capture historical moments of civic engagement. Second, series of documents are presented to promote historical literacy. Third, the THLC curriculum provides teachers with explicit strategies, including instructional materials and graphic organizers, to support students in conducting historical inquiry.
 The THLC curriculum suggests that an in-depth understanding of the disciplinary characteristics of history and historical inquiry can contribute to the development of informed civic engagement. Especially with the rapid advancement of information technology, there is an increasing emphasis on the ability to effectively manage diverse information.
