초록
This paper aims to examine varying subjectivities represented in David Henry Hwang’s FOB (1980). Hwang, a representative Asian American playwright, attempts to explore subjectivity issues through many of his works including such his early work as FOB. Changing subjectivities are mainly represented with the aspects of searching for becoming a perfect ABC in FOB. This paper discusses how Dale projects himself onto his doubles for his self-actualization. As projection is a way of doubling, Dale tries to liberate himself from his own suppression through projection of the suppressed ethnicity or Asian American sensibility. Dale projects his racial suppression or anxieties onto his parents (old-self and hatred of FOB), Steve (alter-ego and racial shadow), and Grace (mediator between Dale and Steve). The psychic conflicts and the interaction of Dale with the above characters enable Dale to reborn. In showing such a possibility, Dale’s doubles in each different circumstance offer hope for the potential to contest and critique the fixed racial-ethnic hierarchy and form a transnational diasporic subjectivity.
