초록
All’s Well That Ends Well dramatizes the contradiction of female subjectivity. In the play Helena challenges the conventional concept of virginity in male-dominated society by losing it to her own liking. To win her love and marriage, she manipulates the bed-trick with which she can coerce her lawful husband having sex with her against his will. So, the bed-trick is not the consummation of marriage, but rather an act of prostitution in which Helena serves her husband’s unlawful and immoral lust for purely physical union. But her fundamental desire impelling the bed-trick is to become the object of his desire, namely, to fit herself to his fantasies. Thus, her marriage founded on the contradiction of female subjectivity seems to preclude a satisfactory resolution for her sexual desire, and also suggests that marriage is only one solution, at best temporary, for a recurring human problem caused by sexual instinct.
