초록
<Fires On the Plain>Excerpt The inner contradictions and corruption of ruling class, the invasion of European Powers and other forces, and the development of modern ideology finally pushed Korea into a precarious situation in the late 20th century. <Fires On the Plain> written by Yu Hyunjong, taking the side of people, renders the Donghak Peasant’s Rising concretely and believes that the people are the motive force of history. Although peasants suffered from the brutal oppress and exploitation of the feudal class at that time, they, appearing servility, have gradually realized the esteem of human beings. Through presenting the process of struggling for subjectivity, the book shows the people’s criticism to the medieval governing order, their strong thirsty for modern civilized society and the firm idea of equality and independence. At the same time, with the description of the impasse of the opportunists who have been looking for a comfortable and glorious life through drifting the stream, the author criticizes the incorrect world outlook of some people at that time. In essence, this is consistent with the idea of the people’s role in making history.
