초록
This thesis aims to consider the representation of male and female subjectivities through the meaning of female chastity in a patriarchy within a feminist approach by looking closely at the language of two main characters, Lucrece and Tarquin, of The Rape of Lucrece. Tarquin is an agonistic competitor and he is inscribed within a heroic discourse. Lucrece takes her traditionally feminine position in the same discourse as victim of heroic agons. This comprise the Roman ideology of male honor and female chastity values. In the process leading to the rape, the possessive, dominating gaze of Tarquin is compared with Lucrece’s innocence that is figured as a passive, superficial looking. The term ‘blazon’ meaning both a poetic description of a woman and a heraldic description of a shield is introduced as one of key words to represent the sharp contrast of two subjectivities of man and woman. Although Shakespeare condemns the rape as a crime in condition that clearly stain heroic value, her action of suicide nontheless remains inscribed within heroic discourse, creating a contradiction at the heart of this poem.
