초록
This article examines the narratives of girls in contemporary children’s graphic novels, focusing on their transformation and emerging subjectivities in relation to mobility. Situated between picture books and non-illustrated works, the graphic novel functions as a transitional medium through the sequential arrangement of images and text. Likewise, the girl, moving from childhood through adolescence towards womanhood, embodies mobilities in the process of ongoing becoming. Drawing on David Wiesner and Donna Jo Napoli’s Fish Girl (2017) and Victoria Jamieson’s Roller Girl (2015), the study explores how girl protagonists employ new forms of movement, such as legs or roller skates, to move beyond restrictive boundaries and claim empowering self-expression—Mira through her newly articulated voice and Astrid through girl power. It further argues that graphic novels, as hybrid texts, use multimodal strategies to depict girls’ psychological, corporeal, and social mobilities, thereby showing how the genre effectively reimagines narratives of girlhood.
