초록
This paper analyzes Nishiki-e based on illustrations for feature articlesand related articles written by Kishida, who reported the Taiwaninvasion in 1874. The key points are as follows.
First, the illustrations published in feature articles on the Taiwaninvasion, such as “Taiwan shinbo” and ”Taiwan sōgo,” were designed asvisual devices to complement the articles written through Kishida’s localcoverage. However, the illustrations for articles on the Taiwan invasionallowed readers to recognize themselves as “Japanese” “nationals”distinguishable from the “wild tribesmen” of Taiwan.
Second, the images of the Taiwan invasion were extensivelydistributed through the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shinbun in Nishiki-e in itsrelated articles and illustrations. As a result, the Nishiki-e thatdescribed the Taiwan invasion helped Japanese readers realize throughvisual devices that their “happiness” lie in the “happiness” of “Japan,”making themselves believe that they are the “nationals” of Japan.
