초록
This essay aims to understand America’s far-right conspiracy theories since the Cold War. Almost every conspiracy theory is an expression of agency because it tries to give a sense of order and meaning to seemingly random events. However, there is a significant difference between the Cold War conspiracies and the post-Cold War conspiracy theories. While the John Birch Society, founded by Robert Welch in 1958, articulated paranoia, hatred, and hostility against communism, the Cold War conspiracist group was marginalized by mainstream conservative politicians. Conspiracy stories in the post- Cold War period were not confined to the anti-communist sentiment but exhibited various topics such as extraterrestrials and the United Nations. Furthermore, as is evident in the QAnon conspiracies about the coronavirus pandemic, conservative Republican politicians tried to collude with the crackpot conspirators rather than distancing themselves from them.
