초록
This paper aims at analyzing the role of race/ethnicity in Fujimori's victory in the presidential election of 1990. As a son of Asian immigrants, he is considered to have run a successful campaign by mobilizing indigenous and mestizo votes by evoking support from non-white population in Peru. However, an important question emerged from the victory of Fujimori: why did an Asian Peruvian became the first successful challenger against the hegemonic racial hierarchy not an indigenous or mestizo candidate? Scholars of political representation of ethnic minorities have argued that the success of ethnic minority candidates depends on minimizing threats or resistance from the hegemonic ethnic group i.e. the whites. This article explains Fujimori's success in political campaign in 1990 by applying such theoretical arguments. In other words, the author argues that Fujimori's success can be explained with his ability to maximize supports from non-white population as well as to minimize possible threats that the white population might feel against him.
