초록
This study aims at presenting academic issues of the connection between immigration and religion by examining religious communities of foreign migrant workers in Korea. Despite a short history of labor immigration and other structural limitations, namely unstable living conditions, religion serves as a very important element for foreign workers. With the exception of the Chinese and the Japanese, foreign migrant workers lack social, political, cultural and historical ties with Korean society. Therefore, they depend more heavily on religion at least in the early stage of immigration. Especially, formation of a religious community is the most representative aspect of religious lives of immigrants. Observing examples analyzed in this study indicates that religious communities of immigrants show diverse characteristics similar to those of ethnic community, local religious community, civic organization, resident community, and immigrant support organization.
