초록
In this study, we investigate English native speakers’ cognitive intuition about chunking patterns within English sentences. More specifically, we ask participants where they would pause out of the three possible positions - before ‘be’, after ‘be’, or other - in a sentence which includes the verb ‘be’, assuming an English learning environment in which they read a sentence aloud in chunks, with beginner English learners reading along. The results of our experiments show that various factors, including the meaning of ‘be’, word count, and syllable count, as well as syntactic structure, interact to determine the appropriate chunks of a sentence. This contradicts the traditional thinking that chunking is essentially based on grammatical structure. Relatively low consistency amongst annotators (Fleiss’ Kappa, 45.74% - fair to good) shows that there can be various variations in the chunking patterns employed by English native speakers, depending on context. In addition, we discovered that syllable count takes priority over other factors, such as the meaning of ‘be’, word count, or grammatical boundaries.
