초록

The purpose of the present paper is to verify the validity of a translated text's reception status as a criterion for translation quality evaluation in general and target readership-oriented translation quality evaluation in particular. Those schooled in the Skopos theory posit that readers' response to a translation should be a critical translation quality evaluation criterion. They believe that the meaning as the object to be transferred between the source and the target texts should be selected and delimited by its target readership who will read the translation for specific communicative purposes. The present study attempted to verify with empirical data whether a translation already received and being used for its intended purposes can be deemed a proof that the translation in question is successful. Specifically, website entries being run by a total of twelve government agencies were collected in both English and Korean, built into a parallel corpus, and analyzed for the research questions of this study. It was found that a text's reception status could not be interpreted to guarantee the quality of the translation.
