초록
This paper is to investigate major weaknesses of intensive method of English reading classes and suggest more effective and creative ways of teaching reading in Korean English classes. Intensive teaching is still prevalent in Korean English reading classes. As the intensive reading methods are too much concerned about mechanical aspects of reading such as grammar rules and sentence structures, they have many problems : classes can cover only limited amount of reading, classes easily lead to teacher-centered lecture rather than student-centered, and all linguistic knowledge that students learn is far from authentic use of the language. This paper suggests teaching methods and model classes to improve intensive reading classes. First, students should be arranged to cover more amount of readings through easy reading. When the students are guided to read less challenging books more frequently, they become joyful readers as well as confident language-learners. Also, the students come to understand wide range of social and cultural background knowledge of target language, which are essential factors of language competence.
